My Attempt at Prose Fiction

This isn’t a normal blog post! Instead, I want to share an excerpt from my incomplete prologue to a story I’m writing.

I’ve been reading John Truby’s “The Anatomy of Story” and am inspired and excited to get to writing my own stories again. I used to fear sharing my writing, but I’m putting it out there to give you all a taste of what’s coming! Remember, it’s incomplete, unedited, and I haven’t written this kind of prose in a long time, so go easy on me!

I was born in the Fairy Domain, where any bit of darkness gets snuffed out by the luminance of the many wings littering the realm. Fairies are agents of light, created by a higher power to use our gifts to cleanse areas outside of our world sullied by the influence of corruption. That is our calling, our mission, why we exist. To deviate from that path is to go against the will of the one who created us, so I have been told. But isn’t there more to life than what we do? Yes, what we do is important and beneficial, but I had a strong desire to expand my knowledge about the various worlds and realms surrounding me. Seldom did we leave the Fairy Domain except on mission to purge darkness on the outskirts of our home. Besides that, we did not have a reason to leave, as we had everything we needed and then some. I wanted more, or rather, different.

The Celestial Council chose me to join an expedition to a foreign place called the Realm of Humans. This was a land rife with wickedness; the level of it had spiked to unprecedented highs as of recently. A large team of Fairies, about two hundred of us, were to be stationed in the Realm of Humans for an extended period. Our mission was to find the root of darkness plaguing the land and eradicate it. Finally, I could leave the Domain after years of wondering what else was out there. My strong desire for different was going to be fulfilled! However, though my entire being seemed ready for the journey, nothing could have prepared my heart for trial and tribulation it would endure.

We crossed the border into the Human Realm unbeknownst to the humans, but not because we disguised ourselves from them. I was astounded humans looked just like us, minus the airfoils. It astonished me to see that humans had the same shape and colors of heads and faces, five fingers on two hands, legs and feet as us. Were they created in our own image? Or, perhaps, we in theirs? Because of the stark similarities, we could blend in with the humans without them noticing. It helps that we can hide our wings… otherwise, that would be a dead giveaway.

Assimilating to human life, while cleansing the darkness plaguing their land without being seen, was quite the challenge for the lot of us. We scattered across the area in smaller groups to cover more ground, banishing any hint of darkness we saw. A few days of travel later, I found myself in a peculiar village of sorts. The humans living there were more eccentric than the humans I was used to being around; the males wore robes, and the women wore dresses and floppy, pointy hats. All articles of clothing had a purple-ish, pink, blue hue to them. What fascinated me the most, however, was these human’s powers - even they bore resemblance to ours in some ways!

As I mentioned above, there is more in the works. I can’t share anything else now, but I promise there will be a ton of content coming in the next few months.

Thank you for reading! If you have any suggestions or questions, reach out!!
